1)  Equine Assisted Learning
Journey Home's equine assisted youth programs for ages 7 - 18 target character development, civic participation and service learning.  Programs are presented in an educational format, facilitated by certified horse professionals using experiential skill building exercises.  These excerices were developed by the founder of Equine Assisted Psychotherpy, Greg Kersten.  They are masterful activities designed to generate positive engagement and offer analogies to life issues.  We address leadership, teamwork, responsibility, work ethic, independence, communication, relationship, healthy choice making, motivation, self-esteem, peer pressure, anger management and more.  Programs are 6 weeks to several years in length.

*  Giddy-Up Go Girls
  -  For 4th to 6th grade girls, utilizing the Women's Sports Foundation "GoGirlGo" educational curriculum.  We emphasize the theme of each lesson during interaction with the horses.

*Hero's Trail
 - For boys and girls ages 7-15, based on T.A. Barron's "Hero's Trail, Guide for a Heroic Life".

*Trail of Courage
 - For boys and girls ages 7-15, utilizing Matthew Kelly's "Book of Courage".

*Champions
 - For adolescent boys and girls ages 10-18, using Patti and Randy Mandrell's "Champions" curriculum.

*Bear Creek Riders Performance Team
 -  For youth ages 12-18 who have graduated from previous Journey Home Learning Programs and who have demonstrated excellence in committment, teamwork and positive attitude.  This group is responsible for performing at Journey Home's Annual Cowboy Shindig and various parades during the year. They also assist as peer leaders in other Journey Home programs, teaching younger and less experienced students the basics of horsemanship and the value of teamwork.  In 2005, the Riders elected to take the US Army 1st Cavlary Divison as their service project.  They created a Tribute to the 1st Cav Veterans and presented it at that year's Shindig.  Since then, the group has been officially inducted into the 1st Cavalry Southeastern Colorado Chapter.  The relationship between the two organizations is fun and rewarding beyond measure.  The 1st Cav Veterans are amazing role models for our youth.  Thank you First Team!

4)  Craftsmanship
Youth and adult classes in the Koster Classroom at Journey Home Headquarters.  While most of the class time is utilized with hands on craft work, we include several sessions with the horses in the arena.  The horse exercises are specific empowerment tools to address creativity, skill building, fun, using resources at hand, goal setting, problem solving, teamwork and self discipline.  We have much to learn from a horse who likes to work and play.  Program length is 4 to 12 weeks.  Participants have the opportunity to place their finished product on consignment in Adventure Trail retail shop, if product meets quality excellence standards.

*Dec the Walls  (decorative sign painting)

*In Stitches  (sewing)

*Light the World  (candle making)

*Jingle Jangle  (jewelry making)

5)  Entrepreneurship
"Rearin' to Go!"  Youth and adult empowerment, skill building and economic self sufficiency.  Education in the classroom and arena.  Hands on participation in gift shop business at 1018 West 7th St. in Walsenburg, Colorado. Students will have the opportunity to consign their product in the gift shop and learn how to market their product regionally and nationally.    Several sessions will be in the arena with the horses to facilitate program skills (creative thinking, self-discipline, time management, problem solving, decision making, customer service, effective communication).

This is an exciting phase of Journey Home's long term plan to experientially educate (teach through experience) economically disadvantaged youth and adults how to step out of a limiting mindset, open the doors to creativity, use what you've got, learn new skills and get r done!  With lots of elbow grease and teamwork, the facility is going through quite a transformation from an historic auto shop to classrooms and an indoor arena where we can accommodate more after-school programs.

The gift shop doors are now open.  Adventure Trail was created in 2005 as a for- profit, functional, hands-on training model.  It is an experiential opportunity to learn, develop and explore entrepreneurship while having fun.  Adventure Trail features the work of local craftsmen and Jouney Home students.  Profits are donated to Journey Home, continuing the legacy of service.
Program length is 8 weeks - ages 7 - 10
                             40 weeks - ages 11-18
                             40 weeks - adults
