Lessons from the herd can hold great opportunity for teaching humans the balance of life.  The herd  supports and values each member.  The importance of belonging is crucial.  There are clear rules and personal boundaries.

Relationship with the horse inherently teaches acceptance and tolerance because we must learn their language and invest the time to teach them our language.  How a person carries himself and even how he is thinking affects the reaction of a horse.  He detects incongruence in a heartbeat and teaches the dance of good communication.

Horses model the importance of fun. They require us to focus.  They are tough and steadfast partners. They don't judge. They don't forget. They don't let you slide. Their feedback is immediate and honest to the core. Relationship with them holds answers to our Selves.

The ground exercises we use in our learning and therapy programs dramatize inner struggles and relationship issues. The horse may instinctively mirror what we need to see in ourselves by magnifying problem areas. For example, when the human is hurried, the horse invariably scoffs at the ridiculous antics of hurry mode.  "Not today", a horse seems to say, when we demand NOW!  They have a way of silently and powerfully helping us reframe our perspective to a  balanced view.

Our work demonstrates compelling evidence that horses are masterful teachers in family dynamics, social rules, discipline, nurturing, respect and trust.  Relationship with the horse is Journey Home's foundation for learning.   Even in the non-horse programs (like Craftsmanship and Entrepreneurship), we utilize specifically designed ground exercises with horses to teach creative thinking, problem solving, inituitive and communication skills.  These interactive exercises drive home the lesson, as opposed to sitting in a classroom discussing theory.

Most of the exercises we use have been developed by the founder of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Greg Kersten.  Visit his website for upcoming training dates at
